Chiropractic treatment often involves specific correction of joint dysfunction (joints not moving properly). This is most commonly observed in the spine. Chiropractors use spinal manipulation (also known as adjustments) to correct joint misalignments to return proper motion to the involved joints. Over time, these misalignments can cause pain, muscle spasm, inflammation and joint deterioration.
Chiropractic doctors are also trained similarly as physicians to diagnose whether the problem is caused by something other than the joints, like infection, trauma, arthritis, metabolic and vascular disease, or congenital anomalies.
After a comprehensive assessment and a diagnosis is made, correction of joint dysfunction and other techniques to help heal or correct joint problems are utilized. Most chiropractic doctors use their hands to gently restore normal function to these affected joints or vertebrae.
The chiropractic doctor may also use soft tissue therapy, electro-therapy or exercise based rehabilitative approaches to help reduce spasm and muscle imbalance. Nutritional advice, education on posture and body bio mechanics, and a counseling are frequently included in chiropractic care.
Modern chiropractic doctors work with other professionals in the community such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, massage therapist, psychologists and medical doctors to provide strong ancillary team efforts. This info is quoted from www.nlchiropractic.ca.
